Episode 70: Aunt Julia Knows // Clementine Barnabet

Patrice, Marleah, and Bartender Courtney drink Dr. Claudia Martinis and talk Louisiana, clairvoyance, conjure, and cults.

Aunt Julia Knows //

Three Louisiana communities thrived and prospered on the Western shores of Lake Pontchartrain during the turn of the century. That is until a song and a death heralded their demise. Does the singer of that song still roam the Manshac Swamps? Only Aunt Julia knows.

The Case of Clementine Barnabet //

In 1911 and 1912, family after family in Louisiana and Texas was slaughtered in their sleep with an axe. Was it the work of a mysterious cult led by a 19-year-old girl? Was it a spree meant to send a message against race mixing? Or the work of a rail-riding psychopath killing indiscriminately?

EPISODE DRINK:

The Dr. Claudia Martini

As you heard in this episode, Bartender Courtney's dear friend and mentor passed away last week of COVID-19. She was an amazing woman, a trailblazer, an ass-kicker, and an absolute boss.

Here's the recipe for Dr. Claudia's signature martini. Don't make it without raising your glass to a hell of a lady.

As Claudia would have ordered it, this is a Bombay Sapphire gin martini, very cold, very dry, up with a twist.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 oz Bombay Sapphire gin
  • Dry vermouth
  • Lemon

PREPARATION

  • Pour ice water into a martini glass and let sit until very cold.
  • Add gin to a shaker with ice and shake until cold.
  • Pour ice water out of glass. Drip a very tiny amount of vermouth in glass, roll around, and pour out. (Claudia carried a spritzer bottle of dry vermouth in her purse for just this purpose.)
  • Strain gin into prepared glass.
  • Garnish with a twist of lemon. Run the twist around the rim and drop into your drink.
  • Enjoy with class and reverence.
